Track your iPhone

One thing that I've just known about iPhone (and iPad) is it's keeping a record of where it has been taken. The record is then copied to computer that you use for syncing the iPhone. By default, you can't open the file to see where have you taken your iPhone. But you can now see it with a mac app named iPhone Tracker which can be downloaded in here.

Here's an example of my iPhone movement.

Now I wonder if only iPhone also automatically stores the file into somewhere on-line so I can also track down my stolen iPhone 3GS.

XL's *123# is misleading

I've been a loyal XL's postpaid user since 2004 and had never got disappointed until today. Last month I decided to migrate from Telkomsel (Flash) into XL for their broadband internet service. Two days ago my one-month subscription ended so I need to reload SIM's credits to continue it. Before I do so, I checked *123# to see how much credit should I need, and it says they cost one-month-unlimited-internet at IDR 99 thousands, means IDR 100 thousands cheaper than I should pay last month. Awesome, me thought.

So I reloaded credits and tried to subscribe through *123#, but had no luck, it kept saying the operation timed out. I called their CS and told my situation, and they said they're sorry they could not help me by that time 'cause their system was currently offline, so I need to wait for couple of hours and reach them back. I tried again on the next day (which is today) and now they say that I have to pay IDR 199 thousands to continue my subscription. I asked 'bout information I got on *123# and they say it only applies if you bought the SIM after October first. Huh? So why they ONLY put the 99 thousands price on *123# options then? As if EVERY customers could subscribe to it. Meh.

Special Nearby on Foursquare

I just noticed that Foursquare now has added Special Nearby feature on their iPhone app. It appears on right top of the venue page. Once you click it, it will show the nearest venue that has offers related to your check-in activities.

Since Foursquare has started to be mainstream nowadays, I can say that many business owners will be interested to use Foursquare as one of their marketing channels. Let's hope that we can get much free foods or stuffs just by some finger touch in the next few months.

Tidung Island, a lil bit of heaven on northwest Jakarta

Where are you gonna go when you feel bored with city life and want to find an escape destination from the daily routine with a minimum budget? One alternative that you should try is to go to Tidung island.

Tidung island is located on northwest Jakarta. Approximately, it takes 2 hours to get there by boat from Muara Angke. Tidung consists of two islands; Great Tidung and Small Tidung. These islands are connected with a long bridge.

Tidung island shapes like an exclamation mark. Most of the community houses is located on the east part of the island. You need to cross a km or so to reach the west part of the island. Luckily, you can easily find rented-bycicle there.

What you don't wanna miss in Tidung is the snorkeling experience. My travel guide said that Tidung has the most exotic snorkeling spots among others in Thousand Islands. Unable to swim is not a wise reason to miss snorkeling, with life vest and snorkel fins, you can swim like a fish.

If you're gonna busy with heaven-like beaches and corals at the day, what can you do in Tidung at the night? As far as I see, Tidung has no fancy restaurant, but you can get affordable seafoods near the docks.

Feel curious with the island? Wait until you see my expenses for the fun in there. Here's the detail expenses (in thousand IDR):
- Boat (Muara Angke to Tidung): 35/person
- Meals: 15/meal
- House rent: 300 (two rooms, two bathrooms, a tv, a frig)
- Bycicle rent: 15/bike
- Snorkeling gears rent: 35/person
- Boat rent (for snorkeling): 400 (can be filled up to 8 persons)- Tour guide: 60/day
- Boat (Tidung to Muara Angke): 35/person

Surprisingly cheap, isn't it?

Instant Messaging, is getting less interesting.

I still remember back into 90's when internet connection is not as easy as now. Every time I get online and find my friends are online too, in MIRC or Yahoo Messenger, I get psyched out to say hi and the "hi" will then turn into an un-intentioned conversation. At that moment, the excitement to say hi initially occurred because I find it's kinda hard to get online at the same time with friends. So most of the time, the IM-conversation is had by chance.

Time past by, the technology's getting handier than before. Now it's like lots of my friends are always seen online all the time. But now I have lost the excitement to make a conversation by chance. I now always start a chat by purpose. Consequently, sometimes I feel like I use IM service less often then the old times. I didn't say that IM now is a boring service. It's just felt.....different.

Google Maps App on Blackberry

Googlemaps-logo
I just installed and tried Google Map app on my Blackberry. And I should tell that I slightly surprised with what this app can do.

I can see where I'm at, either in maps or satellite view. I can see how's the traffic in it. I can track where my friends exactly at through Google Latitude. Even I can search directions from where I'm at to somewhere specific on map. Totally cool!

Well, I use Blackberry 8520 that has no GPS attached in it. Now with this Google Map app on my Blackberry, I don't need that anymore.

If you haven't download this app, you can get it free in here (open it through your Blackberry).

Plan to buy a Blackberry? Think again!

These are things that should be considered before you decide to buy Blackberry:

1. It's not Mac friendly. Last week I had problem on my Blackberry because I updated the OS (which I shouldn't have) through my Mac, and it got error and ended up with a white screen on my Blackberry with a "Reload Software 507" text on it. I googled and found out the only way to fix the problem is wiping the OS clean and re-install the OS, which only can be done on Windows!

2. The only thing that only can be done by Blackberry (which can't be done by any other cellphone) is Blackberry Messenger (BBM) which has no unique feature among other IM. Besides, BBM is only fun when you have a lot of friends who have Blackberry too.

3. You can't transfer files through Bluetooth to your computer. Or may be it can, I just don't know how, but whatever it is, it's obviously not easy to do it.

4. Browsing web through default Blackberry Browser really SUCKS! It only can open one window at one time. Feels like I'm back to 90's and browse with the old Internet Explorer.

5. The default GUI on text messaging is so uninteresting. It's shown as a thread conversation, but with just text and the sender name in it, I often get confused which one's sent by who.

6. Sometimes you have to soft-reset your Blackberry due to some errors. And don't expect the soft-reset would only take few seconds, ioobecause actually you will have much time to make coffee while waiting the device up again. Sad.

7. The models are so monotone. Bold, Curve, Jave, Nexianberry (oh wait), you name it. Well, it's all looked the same for me. Only Gemini that looks different because it's the first that has no trackball, perhaps.

8. It's really in mainstream in Indonesia. Seems almost everyone in here use it right now.

So, if you plan to spend cash more than IDR 5 millions to buy a new cellphone and have a thought to buy Blackberry. Think again.

I didn't say Blackberry's bad though (not because I already have one). But for a device that's worth more than IDR 5 millions, I'd prefer something else.

XL has no idea how to soft reset Blackberry correctly

Capture8_12_17

This morning I activate the XL's BIS on my Blackberry, then they sent me a message as shown below.

Huh? Don't they know how to soft reset on Blackberry without replacing and put back your battery? Well, here's another way: press and hold Alt+(Right)Shift+Del for a few seconds. Voila!

ATM - Aggravating Teller Machine

I went to Indocomtech, a computer fair,  yesterday with @yayi_meirizka. I planned to go to XL booth to see their promo in Blackberry Gemini. After almost one hour of searching, we strenuously find the booth. I asked the SPG if I could see the cellphone before deciding to buy it or not. But then she said too bad that they just have the dummy, and one of the SPG's Gemini has run out of battery. So I had to make decision by feeling. By that time, I'd never tried or even touched Gemini before.

After a lot of questions to some friends who are Blackberry users, I decide to take it. Me and my friend then queued on ATM because XL only receive cash or credit card. Well, yeah, not-having-credit-card sucks! Oh, and the ATM that we were queueing is ATM Bersama, because Bank Mandiri has no ATM in there. After an hour standing-queue, I was already at the third place before the machine, but then it got hang! CRAP! So I went to  another ATM Bersama, but then found out that it got hang too, but this one had technicians who were fixing on it. So I waited they're doing their job, but after half hour, obviously they didn't know how to fix it. One of the technician even just laughed his brainlessness and sat behind the machine. WTF?! How could they be hired if they can't fix those problems? Seriously Artajasa, you guys should give more training to your technicians!

I pissed off so I decided to go out from that packed building. As we stepped our feet outside, I remember there's another ATM (BNI and BRI) near the front door. We went there then heard some people were mentioning that it run out of money. GREATTT!!

We then went home without bringing anything but a lesson: bring cash before you go to the fair.
